2024 Review: New Engagement Trends & Metrics from the Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Landscape
Every year for the last 31 years, AMN Healthcare’s Physician Solutions Division (formerly known as Merritt Hawkins) has released a report providing detailed data and analysis on physician recruiting trends and metrics nationwide. The 2024 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives is the latest in this series of highly anticipated reports.
Based on a representative sample of the 2,138 physician and advanced practitioner (APP) search engagements that AMN Healthcare conducted from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, the report includes data on physician and APP starting salaries, contract structures, signing bonuses, CME allowances and a wealth of other metrics.
It also offers in-depth analysis on physician supply and demand trends, including the types of healthcare facilities currently recruiting physicians and APPs, the challenges they face, and the competitive incentives they are using to enhance their recruiting success.
Key Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Metrics
For example, the report indicates that physician and APP recruiting searches at hospitals were down from 35% of all AMN Healthcare search engagements last year to 28% this year, as increasing competition and labor costs inhibited recruiting activity at some hospitals.
By contrast, physician and APP searches represented 26% of all AMN Healthcare search engagements this year, up from 18% the previous year, as many private equity-backed medical groups now have the financial resources to grow their medical staffs.
Unlike other reports that track total physician compensation, AMN Healthcare’s Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives tracks physician starting salaries, a helpful metric to those facilities seeking data on what to offer physicians.
The report shows that orthopedic surgeons are offered the highest average physician starting salary at $686,000, followed by gastroenterologists $531,000, urologists at $496,000, radiologists at $495,000 and dermatologists at $486,000.
Over the last three-plus decades the Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives has offered physician and APP benchmarks and analysis that now are referenced by hospitals, medical groups and other healthcare facilities nationwide, as well as by national media outlets and healthcare trade publications.
