Interim Nurse Leader Adds DAISY Award to Extensive Resume

It takes a special kind of nurse leader to step into a new, temporary situation and make a positive difference. It takes clinical experience, flexibility and management know-how—coupled with a laser focus on delivering positive outcomes for patients and staff.

Considering these factors, AMN Healthcare recently bestowed Kathy C., MSN, MPH, RN, with The DAISY Nurse Leader Award for her many achievements as an interim nurse leader over the last 10 years.

In partnership with The DAISY Foundation, the team at AMN Healthcare is pleased to recognize Kathy among the company’s outstanding nurses and nursing leaders who are chosen for this honor for their unparalleled care and compassion.

From candy striper to nurse executive

Initially inspired by her mother, Kathy has enjoyed a distinguished career in nursing for over 45 years, serving at the bedside, as a clinical nurse specialist (CNS), and as a nurse leader. Her clinical experience focused on maternal child nursing before she began building her career in nursing leadership.

"The last 20-plus years I have served as CNO [Chief Nursing Officer] in numerous organizations. My mother was a nurse and was so proud of her career. I started as a candy striper volunteer at the hospital where she worked,” Kathy recalled.

Her true calling

Kathy soon discovered that becoming a nurse meant much more than just fulfilling her mother’s legacy. It has been her true calling and helped her build a successful career that has truly made a difference.

“I love making a difference in the lives of patients, families, communities and especially the nurses who I have been privileged to lead,” she explained. “Serving as a mentor and coach for future nurse leaders fills my cup with great joy.”Working with AMN HealthcareKathy’s 10-plus years of working with the placement team at B.E. Smith/AMN Healthcare have allowed her to share her extensive knowledge and experience with several healthcare clients. These interim assignments have also allowed her to travel and experience new locations outside her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

She is currently serving in a senior leadership role in a hospital in Austell, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.

“I love serving at an organization as an interim leader and when I leave knowing that I have made a difference,” she concluded.
