Preparing for 2025 NRMP Match Week

For fourth-year medical students, Match Week is one of the most pivotal moments in their medical careers. It’s the week where years of hard work, determination, and commitment to medicine culminate in the next step of their professional lives.

Whether you match on the first day or need to explore other opportunities through the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP), this guide will help you prepare, stay focused, and ensure success during Match Week 2025.

Get Started Today

A Timeline for Match Week 2025

Here’s what to expect during Match Week, along with tips to help you make the most of each day.

Monday

The week officially begins with most students learning their match status from the Rank Order List (ROL) they submitted earlier this year. You’ll receive an email or notification through the NRMP’s system confirming whether you’ve been matched.

If you’ve been matched, congratulations! Take a moment to breathe, reflect, and celebrate this milestone.

If not, it’s okay—this is not the end of your pathway. Middle of Match Week brings other opportunities, and this is where SOAP comes into play. Stay calm and centered, and begin preparing for the process.

Tuesday to Thursday

These next three days are key for students navigating the SOAP process. Residency programs with unfilled slots begin reviewing applications, and unmatched students will start reaching out and submitting documentation to secure opportunities.

What to Do:

  • Organize Your Materials: Have updated documents ready to go, including your CV, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a polished personal statement.
  • Be Proactive: Monitor the NRMP system closely for SOAP updates and respond to potential programs promptly. Time is of the essence during these critical days.
  • Communicate Clearly: If you’re contacted by programs, stay professional and concise in your responses. Be prepared for interviews, which may happen quickly and under short notice.

If you’re not participating in SOAP, use these days to prepare for Match Day celebrations and finalize any necessary paperwork for your matched program.

Friday – Match Day 🎉

This is the day you’ve been waiting for—Match Day! Students across the country will find out where they’ll be training in their residency programs. Medical schools often host celebrations, allowing students to share this joyous moment with classmates, friends, and family.

Self-Care Tip: Celebrate your achievements, no matter what the outcome. Whether you matched earlier in the week or secured a position during SOAP, it’s a moment worth acknowledging. Your hard work has paid off in one way or another, and the future is bright.

Best Practices for Navigating Match Week

To make Match Week as smooth as possible, follow these tried-and-true strategies to stay prepared and focused.

1. Stay Organized:

Create a checklist of everything you need to do each day. From reviewing SOAP requirements to double-checking documentation, having a well-planned schedule can prevent last-minute stress.

2. Monitor Notifications:

Always keep your phone and email nearby, and make sure notifications from the NRMP or other residency platforms are enabled to avoid missing important updates.

3. Leverage Resources:

Consult with your medical school’s advisors, mentors, or peers for advice and guidance. Many schools offer direct assistance during Match Week to help students through each step of the process.

4. Be Flexible and Responsive:

If engaging in SOAP, act quickly. Programs will expect prompt responses and a proactive approach if you want to be considered for any openings.

Prioritizing Self-Care

Match Week can bring moments of excitement, but it may also feel overwhelming. Managing stress levels is essential to help you stay focused and make sound decisions. Here are some self-care strategies to guide you through the week:

  • Take Breaks: Spend a few minutes each day unplugged—from your phone, computer, or email. Walking, meditating, or simply pausing to breathe can make a big difference.
  • Prioritize Sleep and Nutrition: You’ll need a sharp mind, so make sure you’re getting enough rest and eating well-balanced meals. Avoid skipping meals or replacing them with caffeine.
  • Lean on Support: Remember to stay connected with friends, family, or classmates who can provide encouragement. Ventilate worries, and trust that you’re not alone in this process.
  • Celebrate Your Wins: No matter how small they may seem, acknowledging your efforts can boost your confidence and keep you motivated.

Happy Matching from AMN Healthcare!

Match Week 2025 is an exciting chapter in your medical career. Whether you match on Monday or find a program later in the week through SOAP, your path forward holds opportunities for growth and success. Stay confident, stay prepared, and remember to celebrate all you’ve achieved to get to this point.

Good luck—we’re cheering for you!
