Empowering the Next Generation of SLPs with the AMN Clinical Fellow Mentor Program: Insights from SLP Full Disclosure Ep. 109

The transition from graduate school to your first year as a practicing speech-language pathologist (SLP) can feel both exciting and overwhelming. It’s a time of discovery, growth, and finding your confidence as a professional.

That crucial first year is where the AMN Clinical Fellow (CF) Mentor Program shines, offering mentorship, guidance, and support to help new grads thrive. On episode 109 of SLP Full Disclosure, Michelle welcomed Janet Scull, an experienced SLP and dedicated mentor, to share her insights on this incredible program and her inspiring career.

If you’re a budding SLP or considering mentorship, read on to learn more about how the CF Mentor Program is changing the game for clinical fellows—and why it might be the perfect fit for you.

From Diverse Experience to Dedicated Mentorship

Janet Scull’s career is a testament to the broad and rewarding opportunities in the field of speech-language pathology. Over her 40-year career, Janet worked in a variety of settings, including schools, rehab facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals. She supported students from kindergarten to high school, as well as patients recovering from strokes and traumatic brain injuries. Her adaptability and commitment to making a difference have shaped her into the perfect mentor for new SLPs.

So how did Janet transition to mentoring clinical fellows? For her, it was a natural extension of her passion for teaching, guiding, and supporting those entering the field. "I loved my time as an SLP, and now I get to share what I’ve learned to help others succeed," Janet shared. Her wealth of experience across different settings equips her to provide practical advice and strategies that empower new grads to grow with confidence.

The Purpose of the AMN Clinical Fellowship Program

The AMN Healthcare CF Mentor Program bridges the gap between academia and clinical practice. It’s designed to take new graduates out of the classroom and into the real world, helping them apply the knowledge they’ve gained to various professional settings.

The program pairs new SLPs with seasoned mentors like Janet, who provide guidance on clinical skills, assessment strategies, and navigating workplace expectations. Perhaps most importantly, mentors offer an encouraging presence, helping clinical fellows overcome challenges and build the confidence to succeed.

Janet emphasized, "We’re here to help, not to criticize. Mentors are there to make you better while supporting the amazing foundation you already have."

For new grads, the program is more than a safety net—it’s a launchpad for professional and personal growth.

Key Advice for Clinical Fellows

Janet shared some nuggets of wisdom for those starting their clinical fellowship year. Here are three vital tips new grads can use to make the most of their experience:

  • Be Open to Feedback

One of the most important skills every SLP can develop is the willingness to accept feedback and use it to grow. Janet recalled her own experience with a supportive mentor who guided her early career. “We’re not born knowing everything—and that’s okay,” she said. “Be open, ask questions, and know that your mentor wants to help you succeed.”

  • Find Confidence in Your Knowledge

While the first year can be intimidating, Janet reassures new grads that they’re already more prepared than they might think. "Today’s programs provide so much more specialized training than I had when I started," Janet said. Classes on topics like autism and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices are now included in many graduate programs. "Know that you already have the foundation—now it’s about building on that with real-world experience."

  • Enjoy the Journey

Janet encouraged new grads to cherish this unique chapter in their careers. "Your first year is a time for learning, growth, and creating incredible memories," she said. "There’s so much to discover about the field, and the experiences you gain now will shape the professional you’ll become."

Why Mentorship Matters

One of the standout qualities of the AMN CF Mentor Program is the supportive relationship it fosters between mentors and mentees. Janet shared her pride in the clinical fellows she worked with, noting their confidence, creativity, and willingness to take on challenges. By providing constructive feedback, additional resources, and a listening ear, mentors help new grads flourish in their roles.

Support doesn’t end with clinical skills—mentors also help mentees build relationships with their colleagues, communicate effectively with families, and understand the nuances of specific settings. Janet reflected, "One of the most rewarding parts of this program is watching these young professionals grow into confident, capable clinicians who are ready to make a difference."
