Surgical technologists prepare the operating room, including the sterile field, setting up surgical equipment, supplies and solutions. During surgery, surgical technologists pass instruments, fluids and supplies to the surgeon and prepare and manage surgical equipment. Surgical technologists simultaneously manage the sterile field and specimens. Surgical technologists perform a count of sponges and supplies to prevent foreign retained objects. Surgical technologists are certified following successful completion of a CAAHEP-accredited program or other programmatically-accredited surgical technology program and the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

-The Surgical Technician functions as an integral part of the perioperative team as the first, second or assisting Surgical Technician under the supervision of the Registered Nurse in delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intraoperative period. Essential Functions: -Applies the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to maintain a sterile environment. -Demonstrates competency in select technical and psychomotor skills, judgment and appropriate knowledge base. -Provides age specific care to obstetrical patients in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the department. -Assists in organization and coordination of supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient and cost effective department. -Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers and self. Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and unit level and established policies and procedures. -Charges for equipment and supplies. -Participates in room turnover and set-up. -Maintains and cleans equipment and identifies items needing repair per policy. -Effectively performs sterilization, disinfection and document loads per policy.

Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to discuss surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Ability to mentor, precept or train in various modalities. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment while being vigilant for the maintenance of the sterile field and other patient safety concerns.
