Nurse Licensure Compact States

What is the Compact Nursing License?

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows nurses to obtain a multi-state nursing license, enabling them to practice in other nursing compact states without having to apply for additional licensure. The Nurse Licensure Compact is especially beneficial for travel nurses, as it allows RNs to travel to multiple states without having to deal with the costs and time associated with getting additional nursing licensure.

Moving to a Compact State?

If you are moving to another compact state, you will need to apply by endorsement for that states’ license.

Non-Compact State to a Compact State

If your primary state of residency is not a compact state, you are not eligible for a compact state license (multi-state nursing license). Your eligibility will be limited to a single-state license that is valid in that state only.

Nurse Compact to a Non-Compact State

If you’re moving from a nurse compact state to a non-compact state, you’re required to apply for a new licensure by endorsement in your new home state. You may not use your multistate license in the non-compact state.
