This is an extraordinary opportunity to advance the Division of General Internal Medicine across all missions, broaden its impact on the community and the field, and build upon the national profile of the Department of Medicine after a historic merger which established the largest health sciences center in the Commonwealth of Virginia. On July 1, 2024, the R1 research institution of Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School came together to form Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University.

The Division of General Internal Medicine currently consists of eight physician faculty and two advanced practice providers who practice outpatient, primary care. The Division is interested in developing further specialization and multi-disciplinary clinics, like the recently established Sentara-EVMS Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program which is led by a faculty member within this Division. As Division Chief of General Internal Medicine, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in recruiting, developing, and managing a team of exceptional faculty members while driving clinical excellence and fulfilling the Division’s educational mission. The successful candidate may also be selected to hold the honor and title of the Oscar E. Edwards Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine, an Endowed position within the Department.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Medicine at EVMS, the Division Chief of General Internal Medicine will be an accomplished physician, administrator, and inspirational leader who is prepared to devote this phase of their career to the advancement of the faculty, trainees, and the division. The successful candidate should possess academic credentials that qualify for appointment as Associate or Full Professor, have previous academic leadership experience, possess a commitment to scholarship and research, as well as demonstrate the ability to lead at strategic, tactical, and administrative levels, including experience managing space and financial resources.

Qualifications

  • MD, DO, or equivalent terminal medical degree
  • Current board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine
  • Must possess, or be eligible for, an unrestricted Medical License in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Academic credentials that qualify for appointment as Associate or Full Professor
  • Previous leadership of clinical operations and/or building new clinical programs within an academic environment
  • Experience leading QA / QI projects or initiatives highly desired

The Organization

Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, comprised of five colleges and schools, represents the most comprehensive health sciences center in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Grounded in commitment to the diverse communities in which it serves, Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is developing a larger pipeline for healthcare professionals and leading the transformation of the health and economy of Hampton Roads and beyond.

Eastern Virginia Medical School is an academic health center dedicated to achieving excellence in medical and health professions education, research, and patient care with a vision to be recognized as the most community-oriented school of medicine and health professions in the nation. Diversity and inclusion are important at every level and rank at EVMS, recently named the most diverse medical school in Virginia, according to the 2023-2024 ranking from U.S. News and World Report.

The Region

The Hampton Roads region that EVMS serves is a vibrant community with 1.7 million residents across nine cities in southeastern coastal Virginia: Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg. Miles of waterfront, historical and cultural attractions, parks and outdoor recreation areas, lively nightlife, seasonal festivals, and family-friendly entertainment make it clear that there’s something for everyone in Hampton Roads. Hampton Roads is the 33rd largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in the United States and eighth largest metro area in the Southeast. It is located 200 miles south of Washington, D.C., and 100 miles southeast of Richmond, the capital of Virginia.

Consistently earning high ranks in various “quality of life” surveys, the region offers an affordable cost of living and abounds in cultural, educational and economic opportunities. Seven colleges and universities, as well as two community-college systems, offer residents ample educational resources. Hampton Roads, also known as Coastal Virginia or the Tidewater region, boasts a year-round coastal climate, with mild winters and pleasant autumn and spring seasons. Summers are warm, yet tempered by breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, and neighboring waterways.
