State College is a college town through and through, a city in which Penn State pride means everything. Known colloquially as "Happy Valley," it is full of dining and recreation possibilities, with restaurants, bars and shops lining the sides of downtown streets. The city is home to a strong arts community, with the Nittany Valley Symphony and Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra being local favorites. Annual events include the Central Pennsylvania Festival for the Arts and the very popular Penn State Homecoming Weekend. Outdoors types will want to check out Mount Nittany for hiking and Tussey Mountain for all manner of winter sports activities.
