Type of Language Assessment

  • General Speaking and Listening

For front desk, registration, or other non-clinical staff. This assessment evaluates spoken language skills and the ability to communicate directly with patients in the tested language for tasks like appointments, directions, and billing—without an interpreter.

  • Medical Bilingual Assessment

Designed for medical assistants, nursing assistants, home health aides, patient care assistants, and healthcare technicians. This test measures the ability to communicate with patients, understand and use medical terminology, and accurately report medical information in both English and the tested language.

  • Qualified Bilingual Staff Assessment (QBS)

For bilingual staff (Level 1) and nurses (Level 2). This test measures fluency and the ability to support non-critical medical interactions—communicating with patients, relaying information to providers in English, and providing translation of simple medical instructions. The test does not qualify candidates for medical interpreting.

  • Clinical and Cultural Linguistic Assessment (CCLA)

Intended for physicians (MDs, DOs), physician assistants (PAs), and nurse practitioners (NPs). This assessment tests a candidate’s ability to elicit symptoms, deliver diagnoses, report findings, and prescribe treatments in the tested language.

  • Medical Interpretation Assessment

Designed for medical interpreters or bilingual staff who provide interpretation services. This test measures the candidate’s ability to accurately and effectively interpret both clinical and non-clinical information between medical providers and patients in healthcare settings.

  • Code of Ethics Assessment

Targeted toward medical interpreters and used in combination with the Medical Interpretation Assessment. This test measures knowledge of medical interpreting ethics and industry best practices.

  • Medical Discharge Translation Assessment

Applicable to staff responsible for translating discharge instructions. This test assesses the ability to accurately translate medical discharge information into the target language.

What skills are evaluated?

Depending on the test, skills such as medical terminology, communication, fluency, and cultural proficiency may be assessed.

What is the difference between qualified bilingual staff and an interpreter?

Qualified Bilingual Staff are healthcare professionals assessed for job-related language proficiency but lack formal training in medical interpretation and ethics. They may not interpret for other members of the staff, such as providers, but they may perform their own job role in the language in which they were assessed.

Qualified Medical Interpreters undergo rigorous training in medical terminology, cultural competency, and ethical standards. They ensure accurate, impartial communication and comply with legal and professional standards.

Legally speaking, only qualified medical interpreters may facilitate communication between members of the staff and patients.
