POV: You're a New Traveler
What is your top tip for starting a new assignment?
Go into your assignment with an open mind and be positive.
What are the top interview questions you ask before starting a new assignment?
- Why do you need a traveler?
- What does the typical daily patient caseload look like? (number of patients, visits expected, etc)
- What happens if the patient census is low? ( will I have to float, go home, etc)
For anyone wanting to make the switch to a travel healthcare career what would you suggest to them?
If you're thinking about it I think it's time to stop thinking about it and just do it. Travel jobs are unique in that while you work a job and help others, you also grow as an individual through your traveling experiences. If travel is on your mind I think you should definitely try it out and expand your horizons.
How do you find housing/make friends while on assignment?
Furnished Finder is the best website to find housing in my opinion. If I can't find something there, I may look for leads through local realtors, Airbnb, or Facebook Marketplace/Groups. Making friends can be hard or easy depending on where you are. Sometimes, you land in a job where there are already a group of 5-10 travelers on staff and it's awesome because you have automatic friends to hang out with. Or, you may get housing with a roommate and click with them. Other times, you may find yourself being more solo. I tend to find friends through hiking groups on social media and meetup.com. I also follow a lot of travel therapists on Instagram and have ended up being in the relative same place as them and become friends. Travel therapy really is a small world once you are in it. There's only a degree or 2 of separation between a lot of people.
